Tip of the Mornin' to Ya!

New Dad Tip: The outfit you put your son in yesterday that your wife applauded you for will get you chastised today. Especially if it still has food on it and you're headed to church.

First Time Parents Tip: You'll watch movies differently after you have kids. My wife and I watch The Lord of the Rings every year. We're watching them again now to get ready for The Hobbit. Usually we would watch the first three films on three consecutive nights. This time around, we've spread 3 viewings over a week...and we're still on the first half of the first movie. We just play it until one of us falls asleep. That's usually 30 minutes in.

Movie Tip: I'm anxious to go see Lincoln. Rob Shepherd's dad plays Lincoln's doctor at the end (I won't spoil it by telling you he dies. Lincoln, not Rob's dad.). To get ready, I watched Evan Almighty again. Those two stories don't appear to be related, but they both have Rob's dad in them, so they must be. Plus, they both take place in Washington, D.C.

Give me a tip!

Blogging All Star Challenge 2012

Artwork by Wes Molebash

It's that time of year again!

No, not that time of year where you have to pay taxes and/or visit the proctologist.

It's time for the 2nd annual Blogging All Star Challenge, where Rob Shepherd and I each pick a team of bloggers and go head-to-head.

Check out my team for 2012, and then go vote for them!

Team Ricky

Tor is a former journalist, author, speaker, husband and father of two girls and one shiny new son, hot off the press.

Chad is an IT guru who lives in Arizona with his wife and two kids. He is a contributor to Not Alone, Alise Wright's anthology of living with depression.

Jamie is the marketing director for a children and family non-profit. She's also one of the funniest people on the Internet, and slightly obsessed with Nathan Fillian.

Monica is Rob's wife. She's the reason he's functional in life. Monica started blogging a few months ago. If you want to see some of Rob's funny stories from another perspective, check out her blog.

Amanda is Canadian, but we don't hold it against her. She aspires to be the world's first sit-down comedian.

Kevin is an author, husband and soon-to-be father. In fact, he may be a father as you read this. Or this. It's THAT close. Kevin is a rare breed of writing talent - he'll make you laugh, think and be challenged.

Renée is a teacher, wife and mother. She's funny and touching. Although not in a creepy way.

THE Joseph Craven is a man of mystery. He is currently on an international quest for ice cream. He is also the host of the Courtesy Laugh Podcast.

Paul lives in Shanghai with his family. Or maybe it's somebody else's family. It's too far to go fact-check. He produces plays and is a contributor to the Huffington Post. He accepts checks.

Jessica is a trophy wife and mother of two. She will make you laugh, cry and laugh while you're crying. She's that good.

The Ultimate Movie - Guest Post by Knox McCoy

Today we have a special treat - a guest post by Knox McCoy.

Knox McCoy is Superman. He's a husband. Father of two. He blogs, runs The My Bad Project, and co-created TV Asylum.

He's genuine, hilarious and the secret love child of Tyler Stanton and Jon Acuff.

Take it away, Knox!

[EDIT: Knox didn't really write this. This was part of an elaborate April Fool's Day scheme involving Chad Jones, Amanda Bast, Joseph Craven, Kevin Haggerty, Heather Summers and Rob Shepherd. Check out their parody posts by clicking each of their names above.]

I LOVE MOVIES.

I know, right?

There's so many that are classics. Hundreds that are my favorite. Several that fell just short of the mark. I mean, I left The Matrix thinking, "There is no spoon? I thought there would be a variety of spoons. I was told this explicitly."

But there is no perfect movie.

UNTIL NOW.

I have decided to create what has eluded Hollywood for millions of years.

This movie will kick butt and take names. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make adrenaline squirt out your ears. You'll give it a standing ovation and refuse to leave the theater until they show it again.

It will be called Ultimate Awesome. It's so good, they're already casting the sequel.

Speaking of casting - you can't resist a movie that has Matt Damon, Reese Witherspoon, Sean Connery, Emma Watson, Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman...IN THE OPENING SCENE.

Love on the high seas.

Zip lines. Explosions.

Dramatic betrayal and redemption.

Slapstick. Wordplay.

Belly dancers.

I haven't even written the script yet, but the initial reviews are already in.

"Sweet Alamo, that was fantastic." - Everbody

I promise no Julie Roberts, though. That horse grin scares me.

What part do you want to play in Ultimate Awesome?

Daddy's Got You - Guest Post For Rob Shepherd

Today I'm guest posting for Rob Shepherd.

Rob is a husband, father of twins, and a pastor. He's striking out on his own to start a church in Virginia.

The beautiful thing about our collective church family is you never really 'strike it out on your own'. I'm one in a long line of bloggers who are filling in for Rob while he figures out how to start a church.

Please pray for Rob and his family as they put everything they've got into reaching people for Christ.

And then go read my guest post...thanks!

Concession Speech

They said it couldn't be done.

They said we'd never make it.

They said we'd get our teeth kicked in.

Boy, were they right.

Congratulations to Rob Shepherd and the rest of his well-paid team - You guys are the 2011 Blogging All-Star Champions!

Would you relish some mustard on that hot dog?

Chirp!

  • You may have to read this post slowly. I'm traveling on business, so it's coming to you long distance...and at dial-up speeds, for some reason. It's quite painful going back in time.
    • I wonder how much it would hurt to go back and visit the dinosaurs.
      • Especially if they ate me.
  • My wife and I each have hand soap by our sinks. We replaced them at the same time. I triumphantly pointed out to my wife that I had run out of mine before she did and therefore washed my hands more than she did. Without missing a beat, she said, "You poop more."
  • Team Ricky is getting it's butt whipped over at Rob Shepherd's blog o' pain. You can either go give us some votes, or you can help me rename the team. I'm really dragging us down. If you've already voted, then thanks! Oh, and get to work! I assume you have neighbors and/or coworkers. BADGER THEM!
  • Chirp! The fire alarm Chirp! in my room Chirp! is in need of Chirp! a new battery. Chirp! I'm not going to Chirp! get any sleep tonight. Chirp!
Stuff and stuff pancakes and stuff how did you sleep Chirp!?

Blogging Dream Team Competition

Rob Shepherd and I are squaring off in the first annual Blogging Dream Team Competition today.

It was supposed to be Friday, but he chickened out.

Then it was supposed to be yesterday, but he took a holiday.

Today, Rob has finally gathered the courage to face his peers.

Head on over to Rob's site, and vote for Team Ricky!

Dieting

I'm always amazed by people who diet.

Some folks are crazier than others, like Rob Shepherd (Weight Watchers and excercise?!?).

Dieting is part of yet another culture I don't understand, like marathon runners, hunters and bikers.

I get on the scale and measure my progress. When it goes up, I think "Well, a beer and half a pizza will do that to you."

When I want the numbers to go down, I don't eat breakfast or lunch for a day or two. Then I don't have to worry about how many carbs this is, or how organic that is.

I also don't have to go to the Hurting Place. The thing about the Hurting Place is that it hurts. I'm not up for that. I took a quick poll, and all my muscles agree that not hurting is what they like best.

What do you do about dieting and exercising?

Guest Post for Rob Shepherd

If you like making fun of me (and I know you do), then you're in for a treat today!

Rob Shepherd is graciously lending his site to me today. I'm not exactly sure what time he'll post it, and I forgot to send him a title for the post, so I don't know how you'll know that what you're reading is my post...except that when you read it, you'll immediately think, "I'm glad I'm not THAT guy!"

So yeah, that's how you'll know it's me.

Head on over and check it out!
